FAQ

Self-assessment — common questions

When do I need to file my self-assessment return?+
The online deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year, with the tax owed due by the same date. We build in a buffer so you're never filing at the last minute.
Do I need to file a return if I'm employed but have some side income?+
Usually yes — if you have untaxed income from self-employment, property, dividends or other sources alongside your PAYE job, you'll typically need to register for self-assessment.
What records do I need to give you?+
Bank statements, invoices, receipts and any rental or investment income details. If we handle your bookkeeping already, we pull the figures straight from your Xero records.
What are payments on account?+
If your tax bill is over a certain amount, HMRC asks you to pay in advance towards next year's bill, in two instalments. We explain exactly what you owe and when, well before each date.
Does Making Tax Digital affect my self-assessment?+
If your self-employment and/or property income is over the current MTD threshold, yes — you'll need to submit quarterly digital updates instead of one annual return. See our Making Tax Digital for Income Tax page for the current thresholds.
